Over the years, we noticed that CPA firms tend to be cold, unfriendly, hectic places. Maybe they are just so busy with the stress of a never-ending tax season.

At Massey and Company, our team is bright, friendly and eager to please. 

Thanks to our team and our guiding principles, we are a different kind of accounting firm.  

We founded the company in 2013 with principles which still guide us today:

We are a Georgia accounting firm specializing in tax return preparation, tax problem resolution, strategic tax planning and cloud-based accounting. Our team includes CPAs, enrolled agents, fractional CFOs, accountants and bookkeepers.  Our tax department also helps businesses benefit from a variety of special projects, such as cost segregation and R&D tax credits. We offer full service tax solutions to cater to the diverse needs of our clients and provide tax planning services year-round, not just during tax season.

Gary Massey, CPA – Managing Director

Gary Massey is the founder of Massey and Company CPA, an accounting firm focused on small businesses and their owners in Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. He has nearly 35 years of experience in tax preparation, tax planning, and IRS and state tax problem resolution, helping clients identify deductions that can minimize tax liability. He holds a CPA, a Master’s degree in Accounting and Master’s degree in Business Administration with a specialization in taxation. Gary is also a Certified Tax Representation Consultant.

Gary’s focus includes helping clients with tax problems. This includes representing taxpayers in front of IRS and state agencies to resolve difficult tax issues, including audits, unpaid taxes, liens, levies, penalties, notices, and related interest. His work requires negotiation on a wide variety of tax matters, including offers in compromise, installment agreements, currently not collectible status, penalty abatements, and helping clients create organized records to support their case.

Understanding the audit process, including reasons for IRS audits and how to answer an IRS audit letter, is a key part of his expertise.  His strategic tax planning work includes retirement planning, charitable giving strategies, and, when relevant, cost segregation and R&D tax credits.

He also assists clients in negotiating IRS payment plans and offers in compromise, helping them establish payment agreements to manage their tax liabilities effectively. Clients can meet with Gary to review options and keep the process simple and straightforward.

Gary enjoys collecting art and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is married to Chelly, a native of The Netherlands.

Austin Bell, EA – Tax Manager

Austin Bell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ.

Austin worked in the Finance departments of Citigroup, The GEO Group, Sun Pharmaceuticals, and Community Partners of Southern Arizona for 8 years, focusing on corporate finance and accounting. Austin found his niche after a transition to a regional Wealth Management firm, specializing in small business and individual retirement planning and tax services.

Since 2019, he has worked at Massey and Company CPA, a boutique tax and accounting firm in Atlanta and Chicago, focused on the needs of small businesses and business owners. Austin is well versed in QuickBooks Online and helps clients get their books set up to support growing companies. As a CPA firm, they offer a comprehensive range of tax and accounting services, including strategic tax planning and representation during audits, and their tax preparation services follow AICPA and IRS ethical standards, which is important for compliance with applicable rules.

Austin is a native of New Jersey and has lived in Southeastern North Carolina since 2018. He enjoys building custom computers, spending time with loved ones, and has a heart for volunteer work with local nonprofits.

Benjamin Massey – Director of Operations

Ben Massey has a passion for helping small businesses and entrepreneurs.  Ben’s focus is on optimizing operational efficiency and enhancing client satisfaction by overseeing the firm’s day-to-day functions. His number one priority is ensuring that each client fully understands the process and feels supported throughout their engagement with the firm.

By providing clear communication and tailored solutions, Ben helps clients navigate the complexities of their tax and accounting needs with confidence. Since his college days, he has worked at Massey and Company CPA, where he is well versed in QuickBooks Online and can help clients get their books set correctly as their businesses are growing, keeping them on track as things change. He also provides insights into analyzing federal tax liens, levies and penalties, emphasizing their importance in resolving serious tax issues.

He is committed to preventing clients from facing tax trouble by offering proactive tax planning services and problem resolution.

Ben holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Entrepreneurship from Georgia State University, reflecting his passion for working with small business owners as they grow. Ben is dedicated to fostering a positive client experience and contributing to the firm’s reputation for exceptional service.
 
During his spare time, Ben likes to play tennis, travel and explore the neighborhood’s best restaurants. 

Evelina Sterea, EA - Tax Preparer and Accountant

Evelina has a Bachelor degree in business administration and business law from the Academy of Economic Studies, Bucharest, Romania. Evelina was a business owner back in her country (owned a fitness club and a vegan restaurant). She moved to the USA 8 years ago and worked in a public accounting firm in Illinois.

As an accountant and tax preparer, she brings knowledge and expertise in financial management, tax preparation, and accounting, helping clients file returns and handle quarterly taxes for small business owners and contractors. She recognizes that not everyone has a background in accounting or finance, so she takes her time to explain these concepts in plain language.

Evelina also specializes in helping clients facing IRS trouble, providing expert guidance through complex tax issues, audits and negotiating resolutions.

Evelina is an Enrolled Agent, which means that she has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. 

In her spare time Evelina enjoys working out in the gym, spending quality time with her family and taking continuous education classes.

Brian Young - Fractional CFO and Controller Services

Brian has over 30 years of experience in all areas of day to day accounting, controller and CFO activities, including business modeling for investors and internal planning, cash flow management, budgeting, and strategic planning.  He has experience with businesses in startup, hyper-growth, and turnaround stages in domestic and EU companies. 

Brian is a CPA (inactive) and holds a Master’s degree in Accounting with a specialization in taxation.  

Joey Akbar, EA - Tax Preparer

Joey Akbar, EA has been a licensed Enrolled Agent since 2012 and brings a decade of IRS tax resolution work and tax preparation experience into his role as an Enrolled Agent. He obtained a Bachelor’s in finance at University of Central Oklahoma and also earned a Master’s in accounting.

Joey has been in the shoes of the small business owner as he previously owned a small clothing store. With the knowledge he gained, today he enjoys helping tax clients with their filing requirements and tax savings as part of a professional accounting firm.

Joey enjoys cycling around the lake and group fitness classes 3 to 4 days a week. His downfall is he is always on the search for some good Mac and Cheese.

Mark Scott – Bookkeeper

Mark Scott holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from University of Phoenix, and a Master’s degree in Education – Teacher Leadership from Lamar University.

Mark worked in Oil and Gas doing Project Administration for Hercules Offshore and Panhandle Energy for about 10 years. Mark currently works as a Business Education teacher at a High School teaching Accounting 1 & 2 with accounting 2 focusing on QuickBooks. 

Mark supports bookkeeping services that help small businesses clients manage financial records in an accurate way that keeps them compliant with tax laws. He is also a QuickBooks ProAdvisor. 

Mark is a native of Michigan, and has lived in Houston, TX since 1998. He is active with his church and volunteers with his Son’s Scout troop, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Texas MS 150.

Mark is also a veteran of the US Army.

Lina Martínez - Office Manager

Lina holds a medical degree in Microbiology and Bioanalysis from the Industrial University of Santander.

Lina joined the team at Massey and company CPA in 2022. Her focus includes working and communicating with clients to help and guide them on their process to become a part of the firm.

In her free time, Lina enjoys traveling, playing piano, reading and spending time with her family and friends.

Diego Martínez - Administrative Assistant

Diego is a civil engineering student from the Industrial University of Santander.

Diego joined the team at Massey and company CPA in 2022 as an intern. His responsibilities  includes communicating with clients, assisting tax preparers and social media management.

In his free time, Diego enjoys playing soccer with friends, working out, listening to music, learning new languages and spending time with his family.
